Increased Cu(II) Adsorption Onto UV-Aged Polyethylene, Polypropylene, and Polyethylene Terephthalate Microplastic Particles in Seawater

چکیده

Environmental effects of microplastic are rather due to their adsorption capacity contaminants than themselves. Aging is a key factor influencing properties environmental microplastics. In order clarify this influence, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and terephthalate (PET) microplastics with particle sizes <0.9 mm, 0.9–2 2–5 mm were artificially aged in seawater for 12 months. This enabled an assessment the change Cu(II) particles under aging. According FTIR spectra, fresh oxidized during UV induced aging process. The capacities positively correlated time. After 12-months aging, amount adsorbed was 1.45–2.92 times higher on particles. For PP PET, effect increased decreasing size case PE, medium (0.9–2 mm) had strongest effect.

Protein adsorption on various plasma-treated polyethylene terephthalate substrates.

Protein adhesion and cell response to plasma-treated polymer surfaces were studied. The polymer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was treated in either an oxygen plasma to make the surface hydrophilic, or a tetrafluoromethane CF(4) plasma to make the surface hydrophobic. The plasma source was radiofrequency (RF) discharge. The adsorption of albumin and other proteins from a cell-culture medium o...

Biodegradation of polyethylene and polypropylene

Polyethylene and polypropylene are the two polyolefins with wide ranging applications. They are recalcitrant and hence remain inert to degradation and deterioration leading to their accumulation in the environment, and, therefore creating serious environmental problems. In this review, biodegradation of these two polymers under in vitro conditions is reported. An attempt has been made to cover ...

Confinement-induced vitrification in polyethylene terephthalate

Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis performed on cold-drawn polyethylene terephthalate PET , cold crystallized annealed in the temperature interval 100–140 °C, reveals the presence of marginally glassy domains above the annealing temperature Ta. This suggests that the thermodynamic force driving crystallization causes the structural arrest of some noncrystalline domains. The latter thus need a ...

Enhancing the Dyeability of Polypropylene Fibers by Melt Blending with Polyethylene Terephthalate

Attempts were made to modify polypropylene fibers by melt blending with polyethylene terephthalate in order to enhance the dyeability of the resultant fiber. Five blends of polypropylene/polyethylene terephthalate/compatibilizer were prepared and subsequently spun into fibers. Three disperse dyes were used to dye such modified fibers at boiling and 130 °C. The dyeing performance of the blend fi...

Polyethylene Terephthalate May Yield Endocrine Disruptors

BACKGROUND Recent reports suggest that endocrine disruptors may leach into the contents of bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET is the main ingredient in most clear plastic containers used for beverages and condiments worldwide and has previously been generally assumed not to be a source of endocrine disruptors. OBJECTIVE I begin by considering evidence that bottles made fr...
